There seems to be an inexplicable connection between animators and flying.
I'm a soaring pilot, and believe it or not, half the animators I know hold a pilot's license of some kind. The other half are just trying to get the first half to give them a ride on their plane or hot air balloon or whatever.
I think that the idea of flight is magic to people who live and create fantasies.
It's one of those things you wish you could do.
Imagine if you could just float in the air!
When the bonds of the real world are broken, gravity is the first to go. Oh and because animation is all "special effects" there's no budget problem either :-)
Miyazaki always puts a flying sequence into his films.
Dream scenarios are full of flight.
Elephants and whales swoop thru the air in graceful curves, and we don't question their right to be there.
When I fly, the animator in me is feverishly recording what it's like, how the movement goes, how it feels.
No two flights are ever the same, but the dream is:
You're in the middle of the air
You touch nothing
